Trump Claims ‘Right to Run Again’ for a Third Term at Iowa Rally

1 min read

President Donald Trump told supporters at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday that he believes he has “the right to run again” for president, even while acknowledging that the Constitution appears to bar him from seeking a third term.

“I don’t know who’s going to be your next president,” Trump said. “I think the law says, I’m not 100 percent sure, but I think the law says I’m not allowed to run again.” Moments later, he tied the claim to his long-running allegation that the 2020 election was stolen. “They cheated us on the second one because we won it three times. So I think I have the right to run again. I think I have the right to run again because they cheated.”

The remarks came as Trump campaigned for Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson, who faces Democrat Josh Turek in Iowa’s Senate race, with the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.

The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution states that no person shall be elected president more than twice. Trump was elected in 2016 and again in 2024, and courts and election officials have repeatedly rejected claims that fraud altered the outcome of the 2020 election.
