Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek series, has died at the age of 90. His talent agent, Zachery McGinnis, said Koenig died of old age at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday, surrounded by his daughter and niece.
Koenig joined Star Trek in its second season in 1967 and played the young Russian navigator in 36 episodes. He went on to reprise the role in seven feature films between 1979 and 1994. Series creator Gene Roddenberry added a Russian officer to the crew of the starship Enterprise at the height of the Cold War, a choice Koenig later described as a statement that people of different nations could work together and care for each other.

Born in Chicago on September 14, 1936, to Russian Jewish immigrants, Koenig built a long career beyond the Enterprise, including a role on Babylon 5. He stayed close to Star Trek fans through decades of convention appearances, and in 2023 he voiced President Anton Chekov, the son of his original character, in Star Trek: Picard. His most recent screen role, in the short film Mr. Fleischmann, won him the platinum award for best actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards.
His former co-star George Takei, who played Sulu, wrote on Facebook: “My heart is heavy. Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”
