Paramount and Legendary’s Street Fighter has fought its way to the top of the North American box office, taking an estimated $31 million in its opening weekend.
The live-action reboot of the Capcom fighting game opened on October 16 and pulled in $12.5 million on its first day, including $4 million from Thursday previews, according to TheWrap. The $31 million launch is the best domestic debut in the franchise’s history, outgrossing the opening weekends of the 1994 original and the 2009 spin-off combined.
Audiences gave the film a B- CinemaScore and an 80 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It came in just under the $38.5 million opening of this year’s Mortal Kombat II, but for the $82 million co-production, first place is first place.
The weekend’s other standout was A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything, which took $12.5 million from just 855 screens, one of the best documentary openings in over a decade.
