Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut was hospitalised after suffering a stroke on Saturday, his office announced on Sunday. His chief of staff said he is awake and alert and responding well to treatment.
Murphy, 53, began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game, according to a statement from chief of staff Allison Herwitt. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke, and later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for further monitoring.

Herwitt said doctors are encouraged by his progress and optimistic he will make a full recovery. His office did not release details on the type of stroke or a timetable for his return to Washington.
Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013. His seat is not on the ballot in Tuesday’s midterm election.
