Len Goodman, a longtime judge on Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Come Dancing, has passed away. He was 78.
According to Jackie Gill, Goodman “passed away peacefully” on Saturday night.
“Len passed away on Saturday evening with his family by his side in a hospice in Kent. He had bone cancer.” His management stated on Monday, as reported by Good Morning America, calling him a “true gentleman” who kept his sense of humor throughout his illness.
After serving for 31 seasons as the head judge of DWTS, Goodman retired in November 2022.
“It has been an enormous joy for me to be a part of such a magnificent performance,” he said, having been with the show since its inception in 2005.
He also mentioned how happy he was to have more time to spend with his family “back in Britain.”
The former professional ballroom dancer and British champion is widely credited with reviving interest in the sport on both sides of the Atlantic.
After Strictly Come Dancing made its BBC debut in 2004, he spent 12 seasons as the show’s lead judge before moving to the US counterpart, DWTS, where he continued to serve until his retirement in November 2022.
Upon hearing of his passing, a large number of individuals connected to each dancing competition conveyed their deepest condolences.
Goodman was referred to as “A Dancer” by Carrie Ann Inaba, “a different judge. a professor, a decent guy, and a great storyteller. A unique soul. A real helper. A man of the house. And… a close friend.”
“It broke my heart to bid you goodbye after the previous season. However, today’s news completely ruined it. I can’t believe you’re gone.”
Professional dancer Kym Johnson-Herjavec, who appeared on the program from 2006 to 2015, also voiced her regret over the loss of a “class act.”
“Today, the heavens’ gates have been adorned with ten paddles and mirror balls. Nothing made you feel better than hearing a ten from Len. He was a polite gentleman with a cunning smile. We truly miss you. Len, may you now go in peace.”
Former DWTS host Tom Bergeron gave a brief yet heartfelt ode to Goodman.
A good man, for sure.
Goodman was praised by millions as “a wonderful, warm entertainer” by BBC director-general Tim Davie. Because of his likeability, he made people of all ages feel as though their families should have him. Len was the inspiration behind the success of Strictly. Both the general public and his countless friends and family will greatly miss him.
Rest in peace, Len. I appreciate all the memories.
