What to know about Shannen Doherty’s sad divorce and deadly cancer battle

The Charmed actress divorced her husband Kurt Iswarienks in 2023 after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

Following an update on her years-long struggle with cancer and the harrowing radiation therapy experience, Shannen Doherty received an outpouring of sympathy from both her followers and famous people.

The former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 has been open about her struggle with cancer, which started in 2015. Her dog Bowie, she claims, was the one who persuaded her to be checked out when he began to “obsessively sniff” her side.

She revealed in 2016 that the cancer had metastasized to her lymph nodes, necessitating eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Even though she entered remission in 2017, she informed the Associated Press that her tumor indicators had become “elevated” just one year later.

Shannen revealed her illness had returned as stage four breast cancer during an appearance on Good Morning America in 2020, which meant it had spread to additional places in her body in addition to the original tumor.

“I don’t believe I’ve thought it through. In many ways, it’s a difficult pill to swallow,” she stated at the time.

Shannen claimed that the recent years have been chock-full of tragic drama. She has had to deal with her battle with cancer, which has since spread to her brain as a result of metastatic breast cancer, as well as the unexpected end of her 11-year marriage to Kurt Iswarienko.

The actress declared that she and Kurt were getting divorced. In 2008, when they initially started dating, her publicist Leslie Sloane acknowledged: “Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted,” adding: “Unfortunately, she felt she was left with no other option.”

In a different statement, the seasoned Hollywood PR specialist added, “You can contact Kurt’s agent, Collier Grimm, at PICTUREKID, as she is intimately involved.”

The only words Shannen used to address the purportedly sudden breakup were these enigmatic ones: “The only people who deserve to be in your life are the ones who treat you with love, kindness, and total respect.”

Before posting two videos of her radiation treatment from January of this year on Instagram this week, Shannen hadn’t given many updates on her fight against cancer. She can be seen putting on the radiation-protective mask in the first video as she gets ready to enter a scanning apparatus.

The second, even more depressing video, which she released the following day, was reportedly shot on January 12. It depicts her already receiving therapy, wearing the aforementioned mask, and lying down with tears rolling down her face beneath a red light.

“On January 12th, the first round of radiation treatment was given,” she said, “after my CT scan on January 5th showed mets in my brain. My concern is clear. I was quite busy because I have acute claustrophobia.”

She concluded by saying, “I am blessed to have terrific doctors like Dr. Amin Mirahdi and the amazing technologists at Cedar Sinai.”
