Miley Cyrus broke down in tears on Friday night while paying tribute to her late godmother, Dolly Parton, at the Hollywood Bowl.
The 33-year-old was playing her first concert in nearly four years, according to Entertainment Weekly. Midway through the show, she told the crowd she had picked the venue because it was the only place she had ever seen Parton perform live.
Cyrus then sang Parton’s 1973 hit “Jolene” as an image of her godmother appeared on the screen behind her. “Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart,” she told the crowd, adding that she misses her.

She also shared the story of that one Hollywood Bowl night, when she asked Parton to let her watch from the crowd like an ordinary fan. Parton agreed, then opened her show with “The Best of Both Worlds”, the Hannah Montana theme song, and told the audience her goddaughter was sitting among them.
Parton died on August 25 at the age of 80, Page Six reported. Her family said she had fought a brief battle with cancer, according to TBS News. Cyrus played two sold-out nights at the Bowl, with the second show following on October 18.
