HBO has officially confirmed its next true detectives: Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will headline season 5 of the acclaimed crime anthology series, with production scheduled to begin in 2027.
The announcement, which HBO made Friday in a brief social media post that simply read “Cage. Banderas.”, ends months of speculation. Cage first tied himself to the role in August and confirmed his involvement at New York Comic Con last weekend, telling a panel audience he was likely to do a season of True Detective. Banderas will play Rai García opposite Cage’s Detective Henry Logan.

The new season will move the franchise to Jamaica Bay, New York, trading the frozen Alaskan setting of season 4’s Night Country for the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. Issa López, who oversaw the Jodie Foster and Kali Reis-led fourth season, returns as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer. She has said the season will keep some of the supernatural touches of Night Country, calling magical realism “my brand.”
It will be the first time Cage and Banderas have shared the screen. The two became defining leading men of the 1990s action era on parallel tracks, Cage with The Rock, Con Air and Face/Off, Banderas with Desperado and The Mask of Zorro, but never headlined a project together. Both actors will also serve as executive producers on the season.
