1 min read

Barbara Barrie died on Wednesday, October 28, at her home in Manhattan. She was 95. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, told The New York Times that Barrie had received a terminal cancer diagnosis and that her death was medically assisted.

Barrie built a career that ran more than six decades across Broadway, film and television. She won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964 for her performance in “One Potato, Two Potato,” a film about an interracial marriage. She earned a Tony nomination for playing Sarah in the original 1970 production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”

Film audiences knew her best as Evelyn Stohler, the mother in 1979’s “Breaking Away,” a role that brought her an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress. She reprised the part for the television series based on the film. On television she also played Elizabeth Miller, the wife of Hal Linden’s title character on “Barney Miller” from 1975 to 1978, and later played Brooke Shields’ grandmother on “Suddenly Susan.”

She is survived by her daughter, her son Aaron Harnick, and three granddaughters.
