Taurid Meteor Shower Peaks This Week, With Dark Skies in Its Favour

1 min read

The Southern Taurid meteor shower peaks on the night of November 4 to 5, and skywatchers get dark skies for the show, according to EarthSky.

The shower produces only about five meteors an hour under dark skies, but Taurids are known for slow, bright fireballs. The moon is a thin waning crescent at the peak, so it adds little glare.

The meteors appear to radiate from Taurus, near the bright star Aldebaran. EarthSky says the best viewing comes around local midnight, when Taurus climbs high. The debris comes from Comet 2P/Encke.

The Northern Taurids follow with a peak on November 11 to 12, three days after the November 9 new moon. No fireball swarm is predicted this year, according to EarthSky.
