President Donald Trump warned Democrats on Wednesday that a third impeachment attempt would “destroy” their party, speaking to reporters a day after the party swept control of Congress in the midterm elections.
“Not even a little bit,” Trump said when a reporter asked if he worried about impeachment. “I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that. Impeachment for no reason. What? For having a successful country?”
He spoke at the construction site of the new White House ballroom, his first public appearance since the results came in.
Democrats took both the House and the Senate on Tuesday. The Times reported that they captured seven Republican Senate seats, including Texas, the biggest prize of the night.

The incoming Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, posted a two-word message after the win: “Lawyer up.” Democrats have promised investigations and hearings into the president and his allies, according to CNN.
Senior Democrats have stayed cautious on impeachment itself. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader expected to become House Speaker, has not committed to pursuing it.
Trump also said he accepted the results. He told The New York Times he was “absolutely willing to accept those results” and would work with the Democrats.
The House impeached Trump twice during his first term. The Senate acquitted him both times.
