Vice President JD Vance blamed the war in Iran for the Republican Party’s losses in the midterm elections, writing in a lengthy post on X on Wednesday that voter frustration over the conflict drove former supporters away.
“The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote, adding that President Donald Trump had said the same the night before.
Vance said Republican voters did turn out, but many who voted for Trump in 2024 voted for Democrats this time. He cited an unnamed pollster who, he said, found four reasons those voters gave for switching: ending the war, tackling the cost of living, putting America first, and changing the US relationship with Israel.

Trump acknowledged on Tuesday night that the war played a part in the result, while defending the decision to launch it. He pointed to higher fuel prices rather than the war itself as the biggest political liability, according to reports of his remarks.
The war began in late February, when the US and Israel launched a joint attack against Iran, and the resulting rise in energy prices fed into voter concerns about the cost of living in the run-up to the election.
