Met Gala 2027 Theme Is ‘extraOrdinary,’ After Galliano Show Is Called Off

1 min read

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has set the theme for the 2027 Met Gala: “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.” The Costume Institute announced the new spring exhibition on Thursday, two months after it scrapped a planned show honouring designer John Galliano.

The exhibition will look at how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects and commonplace materials through craft, construction and material experimentation, according to the museum. Denim, white T-shirts, puffer jackets, paper and plastic are among the materials in focus.

The show will include between 200 and 230 pieces, Hypebeast reported. It opens to the public on May 9, 2027, six days after the gala on May 3, and runs through January 9, 2028, according to Vogue. Curator Andrew Bolton, who is assembling the exhibition, said he had no backup plan when the Galliano show was cancelled. “I had no Plan B, to be honest,” he told the Associated Press.

The museum and Galliano agreed on August 31 to cancel the planned retrospective, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” after an outcry over the designer’s past antisemitic and racist remarks. Galliano said at the time that he remained accountable for the pain his words caused.
