Americans Head to Polls in Midterm Elections

1 min read

Americans are voting on Tuesday in midterm elections that will decide control of the US Congress, with Democrats seeking to capture the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate while Republicans fight to keep their majorities.

All 435 seats in the House are on the ballot, along with 35 Senate seats and governorships in 36 states. Millions of voters cast ballots before election day, and the first polls close at 6 p.m. ET.

Democrats enter election day with a 9-point advantage in the generic congressional ballot, according to CNN’s Poll of Polls. Forecasters have moved competitive seats toward Democrats, and NYT-Siena polls show Democratic leads in key Senate contests.

Control of the Senate could hinge on races across several states. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers for an open seat. In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff holds a polling lead over Republican Mike Collins, while in Maine, Republican Senator Susan Collins is defending her seat against Democrat Troy Jackson.

In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown is seeking a return to the Senate against Republican Jon Husted. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton, the state attorney general. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola is challenging Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan.

A 50-50 Senate would give Republican Vice President JD Vance the tiebreaking vote.
