First reactions to “Godzilla Minus Zero” are in, and early viewers say Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel goes bigger than its Oscar-winning predecessor. Press screenings this week produced a wave of positive responses on social media, ahead of the film’s Centerpiece gala screening at the Tokyo International Film Festival on November 1.
Yamazaki returns as writer and director for the direct sequel to 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One,” which grossed more than $100 million worldwide on a $15 million budget and won the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2024.

Critics praised the scale of the monster action and the IMAX experience. Film critic Courtney Howard wrote that the kaiju destruction was spectacular in IMAX, with human stakes that carried real emotional pull. Critic Adam Hlavac said the sequel over-delivered, with an emotionally charged human story at its core surrounded by the largest monster action of the year.
The film currently holds a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from 50 reviews, with a Metacritic score of 78. It is the first Japanese production shot for IMAX. “Godzilla Minus Zero” opens in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6.
