Godzilla Minus Zero took $6.7 million from preview screenings in North America, according to Deadline, putting the Japanese monster sequel on course for a big opening weekend.
It easily beats the $2.1 million that Godzilla Minus One collected from its Wednesday and Thursday previews in 2023 before opening to $11.4 million.
Analysts had projected a $30 million-plus opening for the sequel. Some now say a $40 million debut is in play, Deadline reported.
The preview total also set a record for the film’s US distributor GKIDS, passing the $2.39 million preview total of The Boy and the Heron from 2023. In Japan, the film has taken 1.38 billion yen, about $8.7 million, through three days, according to Deadline.
Godzilla Minus Zero, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, is the direct sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One. It opened in Japan on November 3 and reaches North American cinemas on November 6.
