Matthew Weiner Exits Peacock Drama The Chairman

1 min read

Matthew Weiner has left Peacock’s drama series “The Chairman,” less than a month after the project was announced. Weiner, best known as the creator of “Mad Men,” had been attached to write, executive produce and serve as showrunner on the series starring Eddie Murphy.

Variety first reported the exit, and TheWrap confirmed it. Sources told both outlets that creative differences between Weiner and the producers led to the split, after executives reviewed the pilot script.

The series is produced by 101 Studios and Universal Television. A new showrunning team is already in place, according to reports, with an announcement expected in the coming days. The writers’ room has paused for two weeks while the new team takes over.

Murphy remains attached to star in and executive produce the series. Plot details have not been disclosed. If it goes to series, it would mark Murphy’s first scripted television role since “Saturday Night Live,” which he left in 1984, and the first project from 101 Studios under its first-look deal with NBCUniversal, which began in January.
