1 min read

Daniel Stewart has paid tribute to his father, Patrick Stewart, with a photograph from their time together on stage. The actor, 59, shared the image on X after news of his father’s death became public on Thursday, 29 October.

The photograph shows Daniel giving his father a piggyback ride during their 2001 production of Johnson Over Jordan at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds. He posted it without a caption. Fans filled the replies with condolences.

Patrick Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, 28 October, at the age of 86. His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, said he had gone through a brief period of illness involving Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Daniel, who followed his father into acting, appeared alongside him in a 1992 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and in the Starz sitcom Blunt Talk in 2015. Patrick Stewart shared Daniel and daughter Sophie, 54, with his first wife, Sheila Falconer.

In a 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, Patrick Stewart spoke openly about the distance that had grown between him and his children, saying his relationship with them had become practically non-existent and that the estrangement caused him significant grief. He said acting had come first for much of his life, and he regretted the time it cost him with his family.

Tributes from across the entertainment industry have poured in since his death was announced, including from longtime friend and X-Men co-star Ian McKellen, who remembered him as a man who wore his heart on his sleeve.
