Early Voting Tops 50 Million in 2026 Midterms, Setting a Record

1 min read

More than 50.5 million Americans had cast a ballot by Saturday morning, with three days still to go before the midterm elections on Tuesday, according to an analysis by the University of Florida’s Election Lab.

The total already stands nearly five million votes above the entire early voting tally from the last midterms in 2022, when 45.9 million people voted before Election Day.

Texas accounts for the largest share of the surge. More than seven million people in the state had voted early, according to the Election Lab data, which is 1.5 million more than the number who voted early in Texas during the whole 2022 cycle. An Associated Press analysis found 862,700 people had voted in Harris County, which includes Houston, by Wednesday, compared with 564,500 at the same point in 2022.

In the states that record party registration on early ballots, 10.7 million registered Democrats had voted, compared with 7.8 million registered Republicans, according to the Guardian’s analysis of the Election Lab data. That registration data covers 27 states only, and it does not reveal how any individual voted.

Tuesday’s vote decides all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the Senate. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate and a narrow majority in the House.
