Former President Barack Obama returned to the campaign trail on Saturday, opening his midterm push with a rally in Cleveland for Ohio Democrats. He appeared alongside Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee for governor, and former Senator Sherrod Brown, the Democratic nominee for Senate.
Obama described President Donald Trump’s second term as two years of chaos, cruelty, corruption and incompetence, according to The New York Times. He told the crowd that voters had a chance to say enough is enough.
He also criticised an advertisement from Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy that featured Acton’s estranged mother, calling the standard of behaviour in public life unacceptably low. The remarks came at Cleveland Public Auditorium, his first campaign visit to Ohio since 2018, according to USA Today.
Obama planned to continue to Detroit later on Saturday to campaign for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan. The midterm elections take place on November 3, with control of the Senate and several governorships at stake.
