President Donald Trump said he is willing to accept the results of the 2026 midterm elections, telling The New York Times on Tuesday night that he was “absolutely willing to accept those results.” The remarks came as returns showed Democrats taking control of both the House and the Senate, according to Reuters.
Trump told the Times he expected to work with Democrats in the final two years of his term. “We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out,” he said, according to the report.
He also put the Republican losses down to his own absence from the ballot. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”
The interview marked a shift from an answer he gave the previous week, when he said he would accept the outcome “if they’re honest elections,” according to USA Today.

Democrats flipped seats across the country on Tuesday, including in states that have voted Republican for decades. Control of Congress gives the party committee chairs and subpoena power, and sets up two years of divided government in Washington.
