Grand Jury Declines to Bring Charges Against Cassidy Hutchinson

1 min read

A federal grand jury in Washington declined on Tuesday to indict former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson over her testimony about the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, according to Reuters.

Justice Department prosecutors had asked the grand jury to approve charges linked to her 2022 testimony before the House committee that investigated the attack. A prosecutor told US Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui in court that the panel had returned a non-concurrence, meaning it rejected the proposed indictment. The prosecutor did not name the defendant in court, Reuters reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Hutchinson served as a special assistant to then White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. In June 2022, she testified that President Donald Trump knew some supporters at his Ellipse rally were armed and still urged them to march to the Capitol. She also described Trump trying to reach the Capitol after the Secret Service declined to take him there.

Hutchinson has maintained that her testimony was truthful, Reuters reported. Trump has repeatedly disputed her account. The Justice Department investigation followed a referral from a member of Congress accusing her of giving false testimony, according to earlier reporting on the case.
